Thousands of people gathered outside the Albanian Parliament today at the start of the final plenary session before the summer recess, demanding the government's resignation.
Protesters have thrown eggs and tomatoes at members of parliament. Police have intervened to disperse the crowd, using physical force, tear gas, water cannons, and pepper spray.
Several protesters have reported burning eyes, skin irritation, and breathing difficulties. Some received medical assistance at the scene, while dozens of others were transported to hospital.
Protesters say the force used against them was unjustified and unlawful. Children, elderly, and women were among those present at the protest, and many bystanders were also injured during the clashes.
According to reports, more than 10 people have been detained by police, including some of the most outspoken activists of the protest.
One of the protest organizers was detained by police while giving a live interview on a national television channel.
Among those detained is also a journalist from Citizens.al, who was reporting from the scene. The Albanian Journalists Association has expressed concern over press freedom and has called on the police to ensure that journalists can carry out their work freely, without intimidation, obstruction, or pressure.
Some protesters are still outside of the Parliament despite police efforts to disperse the crowd.
The protest, known as the Flamingo Revolution, has entered its 54th day, and its main demand remains the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
