The European People's Party group has asked the Albanian government for the “genuine implementation in the upcoming parliamentary and municipal elections of the reformed Electoral Law.”
In a Facebook post, MEP Michael Gahler welcomed the parties’ agreement on electoral reform. He also added that the fact that municipal governments are run by a single party is in stark contradiction to pluralist democratic principles.
Gahler further stressed that the recommendations of the Venice Commission regarding the controversial ‘anti-defamation law’ and the Constitutional Court must be followed. He also called for the beginning of a criminal investigation into vote-buying allegations.
